Java: Type Casting()

In Java, there are two types of casting:

  • Widening Casting (automatically) – converting a smaller type to a larger type sizebyte -> short -> char -> int -> long -> float -> double

    int myInt = 9;
    double myDouble = myInt; // Automatic casting: int to double

    System.out.println(myInt); // Outputs 9
    System.out.println(myDouble); // Outputs 9.0

     

int myInt = 9;
double myDouble = myInt; // Automatic casting: int to double

System.out.println(myInt);      // Outputs 9
System.out.println(myDouble);   // Outputs 9.0
  • Narrowing Casting (manually) – converting a larger type to a smaller size typedouble -> float -> long -> int -> char -> short -> byte
  • double myDouble = 9.78d;
    int myInt = (int) myDouble; // Manual casting: double to int

    System.out.println(myDouble); // Outputs 9.78
    System.out.println(myInt); // Outputs 9

double myDouble = 9.78d;
int myInt = (int) myDouble; // Manual casting: double to int

System.out.println(myDouble);   // Outputs 9.78
System.out.println(myInt);      // Outputs 9
